In 1975, «Häutungen» («Shedding»), one of the most radical books of feminism was published. Its author Verena Stefan was a 28-year-old Swiss living in West Berlin. Stefan’s personal account of struggling with a society deeply rooted in patriarchy and her experiences with leftist men in particular struck a nerve. A newcomer in the literature sphere Stefan rose to prominence alongside her book which sold more than 300.000 copies and was translated into several languages.

Having left her native Switzerland behind for good she nevertheless continued writing about her family, her mother and grandfather. Her books are both very personal and carefully crafted as Stefan paid meticulous attention to language and how language is used: « I walk around for days without finding any words. They are all inadequate. »

This is the story of how she gradually became the Mensch of her life, told by herself and people who were close to her.
